100. The Chargers

THIS CHAPTER containing 11 early Meccan verses was revealed after Eventide 103 and before Plenty 108. Its panting racehorses (which are mares) make a vivid picture, but they also give a keen sense of foreboding, somewhat as in Winnowing [Winds] 51 and [Winds] Sent Forth 77. The final syllables -a(n), -id, and ur carry the rhymes.

In the name of God, the Mercy-giving, the Merciful!

*By the snorting chargers
*striking sparks [with their hooves]
* and racing [home] by morning,
* so they leave a trail of dust
** as they dash into the middle
of the troops with it; * everyman
is grudging towards his Lord!

* He himself [acts] as a witness to that;
* and is quite passionate
in his love of wealth.

* Does he not realize that when whatever
[lies] in graves is tumbled out,
** and whatever is on [people's] minds
is checked up on, * their Lord
will be Informed about them
on that day?
