Monographs in Translation and Interpreting

The Universities of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón have set up a new international, peer-reviewed journal on translation: MonTI (Monographs in Translation and Interpreting, Monografías de Traducción e Interpretación, Monographies de Traduction et d'Interprétation, Monographien zur Translation, Monografies de Traducción i Interpretació). What makes this journal different is that each issue (which will come out every January) will be devoted to one single topic, analysing it in depth and trying to open new and critical debates. Each issue will also be an independent book and will have a defined and homogeneous identity. The essays can be written in English, Spanish, French, German or Catalan. MonTI will be published first in book format and, after a six-month interval, in electronic format (on the webs of the Universities of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón). On the web, we will try to provide all the essays in English and in any other additional language the author provides. All the abstracts must be provided both in the language of the essay and in English, or, if the contribution is written in English, in this language and in any of the other languages (MonTI can easily translate them, for instance, into Spanish). MonTI 1 (January, 2009) A (Self-)Critical Perspective of Translation Theories Editors: África Vidal (University of Salamanca) and Javier Franco (University of Alicante). The first issue of MonTI will focus on the current state of the art in Translation Studies from a (self-)critical perspective (this would be the main difference as compared with other overviews), trying to promote debate and to disclose interrelationships between the very different approaches we currently use in our research. The main aim of this number is, thus, to provide a critical discussion of our own approaches. In this connection, it would be interesting to gain insights into what the different schools and approaches do (not) provide, where do their real potentials and limitations lie, what improvements they have brought about as compared with other approaches, or what lines of research are really compatible. The contributions will focus on one of the following subjects: - History of translation - Linguistics (in any of its different expressions) - Functionalism - The systemic model - The cultural turn - Translation and ideology - Post-structuralism and translation - Post-colonialism and translation - Feminisms and translation - Interpreting and the institutions. Monographs in Translation and Interpreting 2 (January, 2010) Editors: Esther Monzó (Universitat Jaume I) & Oscar Diaz Fouces (Universidade de Vigo) Call for Papers In recent years, a considerable increase in the number of scientific meetings, conferences and publications on the sociological aspects of translation practice and translation studies has caused Applied Sociology in Translation Studies (AST) to enter the mainstream within the discipline. As the number of proposals increases, also the variety of approaches, starting points and aims is boosted, together with a certain diversity in the conception of the object of study. The aim of this volume is to provide an overall view of what is being done in this area of Translation Studies (TS) collecting papers on sociology, translation and interpretation. This combination of approaches aims at leaving behind the fragmentation of studies carried out up to this moment, on the one hand, and to foster coordinated proposals which may offer themselves as a meeting point for areas and disciplines, on the other. Although Sociology has provided for the basis of an increasing number of studies in our field, a certain degree of severance between the academic arenas of TS and Sociology still persists. The volume will combine both fields in order to wake the attention of scholars, especially in Sociology, for an object of study which can produce relevant insights both in TS and Sociology and thus foster the implication of sociologists in TS research. Proposals Papers for this issue should deal with: 1) Translation Studies as an object of study within Sociology. 2) Theoretical and methodological approaches in AST. 3) Empirical AST studies in the field of translation, interpreting and mediation. The editors would like to encourage the submission of proposals dealing with a range of topics including but not limited to the following issues: * A reflexive view of Applied Sociology in Translation Studies. * Translation Studies as a field of forces: heterodoxy and orthodoxy. * AST as a space for hybridism (theories and methodologies). * Sociological theories and approaches in the study of translation/interpretation (economy of practice, sociology of professions, social psychology, sociology of law, actor-network theory, sociology of language). * Sociological methodologies applied to translation/interpretation practice (action-research, ethnomethodology, ethnography). * Results of empirical AST studies. A wealth of disciplines, some of them very recent, are enlarging the analytical and research horizons –among them we can mention gender and sex(uality) studies, feminism, pragmatics, cultural studies, postmodernist perspectives, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, feminist translation, descriptive translation studies, and many more. As a result of this richness of perspectives, the intersection between women and translation has grown exponentially, allowing a variety of lines of research unthought of just a few years ago, when both 'woman' and 'translation' were no more than marginal categories in language and culture. The papers for this issue should focus on one of the following topics, among others: * The translation of works written by women. * Works translated by women, no matter the genre. * The task and work of ‚translators’ vs. ‚translatresses’ * Feminist translation * The metaphors linking women and translation: a review of traditional metaphors; new metaphors. * The translation of sex and the (female) body. * The translation of margins –whether social, sexual or personal– and of alterity. * The presence of sexist traits in any translation. * Women, translation and new literary/translatological canons. We especially wish to invite papers which encourage: (1) Cross-disciplinary perspectives. (2) Challenging proposals, with a focus on political or ideological issues. (3) Practical analyses of translations; but also (4) A revaluation of the basic theoretical tenets linking 'woman’ and 'translation'. We also invite 2,000-word reviews of any book related to translation, most especially those dealing with gender and translation.
