Aspects of Legal Interpreting and Translation

Other legal professionals such as public prosecutors, lawyers, judges or police officers, all have their EU associations and can be heard on matters that are of interest or concern to them or the European Commission. The legal interpreters and translators, as yet, do not have such a representative platform in the EU. That is why a consortium of academic and professional organisations have proposed the establishment of EULITA, an international non-profit European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association. (JLS/2007/JPEN/249) Among others, EULITA intends to strengthen and to represent the interests and concerns of the associations and their members vis-à-vis national, European and international organisations and institutions and to promote the establishment of national associations in member states where as yet they do not exist. EULITA is further committed to promote quality in legal interpreting and translation through the recognition of the professional status of legal interpreters and translators. As good working relations with national or regional associations are obviously of prime importance and a raison d'être of EULITA, we would like to extend an invitation to representatives of your association to attend a conference in Antwerp (26-29 November 2009) where on the first day the aims and Articles of Association of EULITA will be presented and discussed, followed by the official launch of the association. Upon registration you will receive in due time the documents relevant to the opening day of the conference. We very much hope that you will want to support the effort to establish this EU-association and we look forward to welcoming you in Antwerp. Aspects of Legal Interpreting and Translation Date: 26-29 November 2009 Venue: Lessius University College, Antwerp, Belgium ([url=http://www.lessius.eu]http://www.lessius.eu[/url]) Programme: On Thursday 26th pm, representatives and members of national interpreting and translation associations are invited to the presentation and discussion of the aims and Articles of Association of the new European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association. This session is followed by the official launch of EULITA in the Antwerp Court of First Instance. The latter event and reception is open to all conference participants. On Friday 27th am, after a Plenary, concurrent sections are scheduled on Asylum/Immigration proceedings (Section 1) and on Training, including CPD and training of the legal professionals (Section 2), followed by a short plenary. On Friday 27th pm, there are concurrent sections on interpreting and translation in police settings (Section 3) and in the International Courts (Section 4), followed by a concluding plenary. Reception in the Antwerp City Hall. On Saturday 28th am, there is a section on Terminology and New Technologies such as e.g. telephone tapping, videoconferencing or translation tools (Section 5) and a concurrent section on Translation and interpreting for the courts (Section 6), followed by a short plenary and closure. Evening: Conference dinner. Call for papers: The organizers wish to invite contributions on interesting and relevant aspects of legal interpreting and translation related to one of the six proposed sections and to share information about quality standards in interpreting and translation practice. They will be reviewed collectively by the partners in EULITA and notification of acceptance will be given by 15th June.
