Mastering Public Service Interpreting
LONDON METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY
The Interpreting Section of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Languages and Education Conference
Friday, 10 July 2009, 10.00-17.00
Host and keynote speaker: Danielle D’Hayer
The increasing demand in public service interpreting (face to face or
remote – telephone o video link), the changing needs of the service
providers (looking for interpreters that also transcribe and/or
translate; outsourcing through intermediaries, meeting targets, etc) and
the global market are affecting this interpreting sector on all levels.
As the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting or other equivalent
community interpreting qualifications are generally considered only the
first step onto a public service interpreting career, we should be
embarking on another level of training to add extra competences and
enable diversification for many public service interpreters in need of
further training, skills and professional development.
Likewise, organisations such as the ITI and the Chartered Institute of
Linguists highlight the importance of CPD (continuing professional
development) for all interpreters - as well as other linguists - and
given public service interpreting related events in recent years, there
is much scope for improvement in this area.
This conference seeks to bring together academics, trainers and
employers interested in questions and issues such as:
§ The current training needs in the Public Service Interpreting sector
§ Why master’s training?
§ Who needs to be taught?
§ How do we start? Entry tests?
§ Who should be an appropriate education/training provider?
§ Who should teach it?
§ Curriculum design: course design, materials
§ Innovative developments: IT, video training
§ Trainers’ role to promote skills (including research, business and
communication)
§ PSI code of conduct and ethics
§ Employer’s views
§ Professional networking
§ Can public service interpreting learn anything from conference
interpreting
