TILS 2008

TRANSLATION, INTERPRETING AND LANGUAGES FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES

Research in cross-lingual communication: theories and methodologies

University of Macerata, Italy
Department of Linguistic, Literary and Philological Research

1-2 February 2008

The TILS 2008 conference intends to bring together scholars from three neighbouring disciplines – i.e. translation, interpreting, and languages for special purposes – who are rarely given the opportunity to exchange their views within the same event. Though these fields of study show ample areas of overlap, as evidenced by the frequent use of the same theoretical models, the scarce awareness of their respective research avenues has so far hampered a beneficial process of cross-fertilization. Theoretical reflection on translation and interpreting as intercultural as well interlingual activities, and LSPs as autonomous yet intralingually translatable codes, has gained momentum over the last decades. The setting up of university degree courses focusing on language mediation competences in many European countries testifies to this interest. The present initiative has originated from one such course, namely the recently established post-graduate Degree Course in Foreign Languages for International Communication of the University of Macerata, where the three disciplines are given equal status in the curriculum. The highly favourable experience of the last two years and the close cooperation between lecturers and researchers of the three areas, who are actively involved in the programme, were the original incentives for the event. Its opening up to an international dimension, with the presence of renowned key-note speakers from other European countries, will no doubt make a valuable contribution to both teaching and research. The long-term objective, however, is the development of stable and systematic contacts between scholars and, hopefully, of joint research projects. Themes Interpreting 1.
